Easy way to Arranging Furniture

When decorating or redecorating a room, many find that the most basic of tasks can be daunting. While some get stumped on how to choose wall decor , others find that deciding how to arrange the furniture can be equally as difficult as trying to figure out if metal wall decor works well with their furniture.

Obviously, correct furniture placement is imperative to good design. Forget the old ways of placing a coffee table right in front of a couch or placing the sofa and loveseat against the walls. There are better ways to make use of your space. Below are some tips to help you arrange furniture in your room.

- Walkways

Whatever activities will take place in the room, one thing you want in every room is a clear path on which to walk. You don't want to bump into furniture, or have to slide sideways between the sofa and the bookshelf. Be sure that there is easy access to all parts of the room and, preferably, more than one way in and one way out. This will help the room feel more open and cut down on traffic jams. If it means getting rid of a piece of furniture or two, then so be it.

- Usefulness

What are you going to do in the room? Whether the primary purpose is to watch television, sit and talk, enjoy the fireplace or, perhaps, all three, you should arrange your furniture in a way that is best suited to those activities. For example, if watching television is the main activity that will take place in the room, most of the furniture should be positioned with that in mind. If space allows, consider creating mini-areas within the room. You could group two or three chairs in one area with some fabulous decorative candle sconces, and have the television and sofa in another. This would allow for some to watch T.V. while others read or chat.

- Focal Points

When someone is sitting in your room, what do you want them to see? When arranging your furniture, sit down and see the room from the perspective of a visitor. Do you get an inviting view of the fireplace, the ornate metal framed mirror or a view of the garden out the window? Or do you see nothing but a blank wall or a cluttered hallway leading to the bedrooms? If you don't like the view, consider rearranging the furniture until you are happy with the focal point.

- Out with the Old

Not all furniture is going to work in every room. To make the most of your room you may have to buy some new pieces. Your current furnishing may be too large or the wrong shape for your space. Find pieces that will work perfectly in your room.

- Miscellaneous Tips

o Leave a walkway between the wall and the furniture. This will alleviate a cluttered feeling and will create a more intimate space in the center of the room. o You don't HAVE to have a sofa and matching love seat. Instead, keep the sofa and try pairing it with a fabulous chair in a rich color or fun pattern. o Don't block windows. Placing furniture in front of windows is a bad idea, and should be done only when absolutely necessary. Placing furniture in front of windows blocks natural light and makes it look like there wasn't a lot planning put into arranging the furniture.

The good news about arranging furniture is that, unlike painting or some other home decorating projects, if you don't like it you can very easily keep changing it until you do! Experiment with furniture placement until you find one that makes the most of your room.
